Hi everyone... I'm a Clydesdale trying to get fit and training for the Michigander. I'm also writing about all this for the Detroit Free Press, where I am a columnist. Anyone in Michigan who wants to meet for a training ride? First one is Saturday May 12 near Rochester. I'll post meet-up spot on my www.clydesdalefitness.com blog. We'll pick other trails around the state for other rides as folks suggest them. |

Mike,
Great idea -- do you road bike or mountain bike? I'm not a clydesdale, but I'm just getting started cycling in & around Oakland County, MI. I would love to go on some group rides to challenge myself. I currently spin at my local health club & run outside 4-5 times a week -- so if your group is open to females, then I'd be interested. I'm glad you are trying to encourage cycling in Michigan.

Is anyone out there planning to do this year's Michigander. I am serioulsy considering doing it but at 57 am a little worried about whether I can do it. Last year was my first year of semiserious cycling. I lost about 80 pounds (still a Clydesdale but hopefully not when the Michigander is held) and a big part of that was cycling 20 to 30 miles per day. Am I kidding myself that I could do an event like that? |

William - If you dod the work to lose 80lbs last year, then I would guess that you should be able to do 20-30 miles a day for a few days. How long is the ride? You may also want to send a note to Gerry Miller, he is a 200+ age 50+ rider and he has done a few multi day rides that I know of.
Best of luck - JC1.5 |

William... I wouldn't worry about a thing, I know I'm not the one doing it! I went to website and read a little about the Michigander.... the two things that caught my attention was the fact that Bubba is offering his services for this ride...I would take him up on it, when I did the Wisconsin ride a few years ago, we went with Bubba, and let me tell you, it is worth the price...all of your stuff is in your tent when you arrive at camp, no pitching and taking down of the tent. The next best thing would be to motel it!!!!!!
The second thing that looked attractive was the various rides that you could do....a couple of days, week, etc.....If you did the two day event it would give you an idea of whats going on.
The biggest thing that I had to learn doing multi day events was that you have all day. I imagine the days are pretty long in Michigan in July...so relax....take you time to where you are comfortable.
I also thought of another thing from experience with the Wisconsin ride....is the ride owned by someone, or is it a charity ride hosted by people that have your best interest in mind. I learned that if someone owns the ride they might be more interested in saving some $$$'s and detour you down an unsafe road... just some thoughts from experience.....
Since the ride is in July, You have plenty of time to train yourself...I'm looking at my first century to be in April... we can do it,

Well I did decide to do the 6 day ride. Sent my money in and followed the advice of signing on with Bubba, too. The ride is a fund raiser for a trails and greenway group. Things have been pretty busy so I have just started training. It is still pretty chilly (41 degrees when I rode today) but I did ride about 24 miles total today (10 on a trainer and 14 after work outside). Thanks for the encouragement. |

Awesome...I think you'll like Bubba's service and make sure to find the cookie stash early in the ride,
